ID Genève teams up with the United Nations for a first of its kind SDG Limited Edition

  • ID Genève becomes the first watch brand to align itself with the United Nations with the Circular C United Nations SDG.
  • It’s limited to 17 numbered watches that each echo one of the 17 sustainable goals, and will be sold only to buyers with a proven commitment to achieving that goal.
  • The watch is crafted from CompPair’s HealTech™ regenerative carbon: a self-healing, circular material that extends lifespan and reduces waste.

In October 2023, ID Genève made headlines with the news that Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio had invested in the company, leading those in and outside of the watch community to search out what the brand is and what it is all about. The brand itself was founded in December of 2020, and since the outset, its mission has been the manufacture of truly sustainable, Swiss-made watches. With its circular philosophy, the cases and straps are made of upcycled/sustainable materials, and even the calibres within the watches are refurbished Swiss movements. This is likely why the brand caught the eye of DiCaprio, a notable environmental activist. But today, ID Genève is taking things a step even further, partnering with the United Nations and its Sustainable Development Goals in honour of the 10th anniversary of Climate Week.

ID GENEVE SDG 5

“The Sustainable Development Goals are not just ambitions on paper — they are a practical plan to safeguard people and the planet,” said Maher Nasser, Assistant Secretary-General, Department of Global Communications, United Nations.

“By embedding the SDGs into the very design of its timepiece, ID Genève shows how innovation and creativity can drive awareness and inspire action. This collaboration illustrates the power of partnership and proves that even in the world of luxury, every second can count toward building a more sustainable and equitable future.”

ID GENEVE SDG 9

With there being 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the ID Genève Circular C United Nations SDG Limited Edition is fittingly limited to 17 pieces. However, each of the pieces is numbered so that buyers can acquire the numbered watch that represents the numbered Sustainable Development Goal that resonates with them most. All of the goals, however, are embodied by the rainbow gradient colour wheel seen on the exhibition caseback.

ID GENEVE SDG 10

In order, the seventeen goals are: 1. No Poverty, 2. Zero Hunger, 3. Good Health and Well-being, 4. Quality Education, 5. Gender Equality, 6. Clean Water and Sanitation, 7. Affordable Clean Energy, 8. Decent Work and Economic Growth, 9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 10. Reduced Inequalities, 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities, 12. Responsible Consumption and Production, 13. Climate Action, 14. Life Below Water, 15. Life on Land, 16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, 17. Partnerships for the Goals.

For a more thorough rundown of the framework of the watch, like its regenerative carbon case that can self-heal, you should check out my introduction of the original Circular C here. If I am being totally honest, for US$10,500, anyone buying this watch is far more invested in supporting sustainability efforts than in-house movement design and mile-wide bevelling on bridges. That being said, not just anyone can buy this 17-piece limited edition. It is available by application only. “Ownership is available exclusively by application, ensuring that each of the 17 pieces belongs to an individual who embodies a genuine commitment to the goal their timepiece represents,” ID Genève explains.

Within the context of the brand’s mission, this is a very admirable achievement, becoming the first watch brand to align itself with the United Nations and make “Swiss luxury an official partner in the global sustainability agenda.” And though some may find the price tag a little hefty, firstly, the tariffs situation is definitely not helping and secondly, 10% of the proceeds of each watch will be donated to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
