Christopher Ward and Worn & Wound take over Brooklyn with this new collaboration
Russell Sheldrake- Christopher Ward and Worn & Wound have teamed up for the first limited edition C12 Loco, the Brooklynite.
- Drawing inspiration from the Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower, a Brooklyn architectural icon.
- With a beige, slatted dial and details throughout that link this limited release of 100 pieces to the New York borough.
Christopher Ward’s launch of the C12 Loco was a monumental moment in the British watchmaking industry. It marked the growth that this small British brand had made since its disruptor moment with the Bel Canto, and proved that it was on a path to continue this radical strategy. To see the next step in the Loco story now forming with this collaboration with Worn & Wound shows how unafraid this British brand is of taking risks.
Saying that, a collaboration with the good folks at Worn & Wound isn’t much of a risk, in fact, Christopher Ward has done it before, and this time it is being aligned with the upcoming Windup Watch Fair NYC, one of the most electric and hectic fairs in the watch calendar. While only 100 pieces of this new model are to be made, only 30 are being set aside for Windup, which means it will be a seriously hot property on the ground. The 70 other pieces will be sold exclusively through the brand’s website starting on Oct 24th.
So what has Worn & Wound done to the Loco to make it their own? The redesigned dial has pulled heavily on the architectural design of Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower, a 41-floor skyscraper that dates back to 1929, which projects out of the Brooklyn skyline with its rather distinct clock face at the very top. Fun fact, this clock was at one point the world’s largest, measuring 27 meters from 12-6. With Brooklyn being the home of Worn & Wound and this being such an iconic, and horological, local landmark, it must have felt like a natural choice to pull from its architectural details, and we can see them in this slatted dial texture and the diamond motifs between the hour markers. The creamy dial colour is also pulled straight from this building’s limestone.
Of course, all the usual, standout elements we are used to seeing from the Loco are still here. The hypnotic open balance wheel continues to spin away above the dial, held in place by two flying bridges that only add to the architectural feel of this watch. The dial is a painted sapphire ring that is punctuated by black applied markers that match the hands, contrasting nicely against the cream dial. Inside is the CW-003 movement, something developed by Christopher Ward in their Biel manufacture centre. Its double barrels offer 144 hours of power reserve and it remains accurate to within ±0/7 seconds a day.
