Furlan Marri adds fan-favourite blue to the Cornes de Vache
Borna Bošnjak- With a subtly grained texture, the Furlan Marri Cornes de Vache is now available in an azure blue.
- The surprisingly complex case is characterised by its curvaceous lugs that are finished before assembly.
- It’s powered by the La Joux-Perret G100 calibre, which offers an impressive 68-hour power reserve.
After being awarded a GPHG award merely a year after unveiling their first collection – the Mechaquartz that became a runaway success on Kickstarter as well – Furlan Marri had a lot to live up to with their second collection. There were no compromises on the case finish, something that always impressed me with Furlan Marri pieces, but the Seiko chrono movement was replaced with a La Joux-Perret automatic, being one of the first brands to do so. That was the birth of the Cornes de Vache, then-named the Mechanical Sector collection. Years after this initial unveiling (and almost two years after the release of our Time+Tide “Outback Elegy” version of the watch), the brand is finally adding blue to the collection, which is surprising considering it’s one of the most popular watch colours out there. The best bit? We’ll have it in the Time+Tide Shop, too.
So, what’s actually new here? Save for the colour of the dial, not much. It’s still a complex-finished piece, with interchanging grained and brushed surfaces. The centre is grained and adorned by a printed sector sitting beneath rhodium-plated hands. The Breguet numerals at the cardinal points and stick indices elsewhere match them in finish, while the rest of it is printed with a railroad minutes track. On paper, all this sounds quite busy – and it is – but in reality, the Cornes de Vache is really legible, and manages to somehow look elegant despite the complicated dial. I personally really like the little break in printing under the “30” numeral to allow the word “Swiss” to be printed without obstruction.
As with all the other Cornes de Vache models, the Blue Sector is paired with two leather straps. One is a double-stitched beige with straight spring bars, and the other is a baby blue that only sort of matches the dial colour, though it does complement it well. This blue strap is also fitted with curved spring bars that look especially sleek. Both are equipped with steel pin buckles with simple Furlan Marri branding.
The case itself is also a complex construction, composed of multiple pieces with the lugs finished before assembly. This allows Furlan Marri to get to those sharp transitions and shiny polishes. The midcase sports a fine horizontal brush, sitting beneath a very subtly stepped bezel that gives it a touch of 1940s flair. Measuring in at 37.5mm in diameter, 10.5mm in thickness, and 46mm lug-to-lug, it’s compact and sized appropriately for its Art Deco dial and case inspiration. Those lugs do wonders to make the case appear as slim as it actually is, allowing it to wrap around the wearer’s wrist.
Finally, just a quick word on the movement. Furlan Marri was one of the first microbrands that used La Joux-Perret’s revived, more affordable G100 movement that has become a respected alternative to the ubiquitous ETA 2824/Sellita SW200. In fact, its Miyota 9000-derived architecture is a closer competitor to the ETA 2892/SW300 with its higher power reserve and superior finishing. Specs-wise, it has an upgraded escapement compared to the Miyota, and beats all of the aforementioned calibres on power reserve, coming in at an impressive 68 hours thanks to an improved barrel/mainspring combination.
