Are you ready to binge-watch with Möels & Co’s TV-cased 528 Series 2?
Tom AustinHere we are, already a quarter of the way through the 21st century. For most of the last hundred years, we’ve dreamed of flying cars, chrome skylines and cities in the sky. Yet when it comes to design, what captures our imagination most today isn’t tomorrow’s utopia, but the familiar shapes of yesterday. One brand captures that 1950s retro-futurism and combines it with the ever-popular everyday dress watch aesthetic: Möels & Co has already given us the original 528, but now it’s back, with the Series 2.
The rectangular, off-centre foundations remain, but the 528 Series 2 has undergone subtle yet effective updates to fine-tune the watch’s feel and appearance. It’s smaller, more svelte, and features some fine detail changes that prove that Möels & Co are dedicated to getting the 528 just right.
The case
The 528 Series 2 is a striking watch to look at, giving off a slightly Audemars Piguet [RE]Master 02 vibe thanks to its off-centre rectangular design. The 316L stainless steel TV-shaped case isn’t actually offset, though, but it has received an overhaul for the Series 2. First of all, the width has been reduced from 45mm to 43mm, the lug-to-lug is down by 1mm to 32mm, and the thickness has been reduced significantly, from 11mm down to a luxurious 8.7mm. Finally, the lugs have received a more pronounced taper and have been reduced in width to a more versatile 20mm from 22mm.
The result is a much more wearable watch, which slips under a cuff more comfortably and sits on several differently sized wrists with ease. The crown has been refined, too, changing from a traditional straight unit to a more interesting and arguably more functional onion-shaped crown. The caseback has been treated to some deeper laser engravings, too, making the text bolder and more prominent. The case also offers 50 meters of water resistance and features a double-domed sapphire crystal with a whopping six layers of anti-reflective coating.
The dial
Probably the boldest element of the 528 is the offset dial. Möels & Co took that cool vision of a 1950s clock and shrunk it down into a watch dial, combining minimalistic, sharp lines with characterful applied hour markers. The dial has also received some subtle upgrades to improve readability, such as a slightly thicker typeface for the Arabic hour markers and chunkier, shorter hands.
There are now five different dials available for the 528 Series 2. If you prefer your 528 to be bolder and more vibrant, the Desert Mirage is a bronze, almost salmon-like colour, while Vistamare is a stunning sunburst teal. The others are slightly more subdued, such as the grey Solo Argento or the Lunera, which features a black sunburst dial accented with gold. Finally, the craziest-looking of all is the Hexara, a combination of the last two, alternating between black and grey radial sectors around the dial.
The straps
The 528 S2 comes with a choice of premium Delugs straps. You can choose from either Epsom leather in black, brown and blue, or a white cut-to-size FKM rubber strap with a leaf-spring deployant clasp. All straps are embossed with “Delugs for Möels”. A stylish and retro-focused mesh bracelet from Staib is also available as an add-on.
The movement
The previous 528 came equipped with a Sellita SW200-1 movement, but for the Series 2, Möels & Co. have opted for another upgrade, swapping the movement for the Swiss-made, manually-wound La Joux-Perret D101 calibre. When fully wound, it offers a 50-hour power reserve while beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and is neatly decorated with blued screws and côtes de Genève. The new movement is just 3.85mm thick, which is the main reason behind the Series 2’s comprehensive slimming plan. Finally, the LJP calibre is viewed through a sapphire window on the screw-down exhibition case back, which is cool, given that the movement is a pleasure to look at.
