Straum & Time+Tide join forces to explore the Jan Mayen with an exclusive titanium special edition
Tom AustinThe modern sports luxury segment is a challenging category for microbrands to target. The competition is fierce, and the choice is not only abundant but also highly refined. Even at the microbrand level, case and bracelet finishes are becoming more exceptional, while watch dials are showcasing increasingly captivating designs and processes. To stand out, you have to be different and not conform to the usual recipe.
One brand that embodies this approach is Straum. Drawing inspiration from Norwegian heritage and nature, Straum creates distinctive pieces defined by their striking dials, each capturing the raw beauty of the Nordic landscape. Now, that artistry comes to Time+Tide in the form of an exclusive collaboration: the Time+Tide Jan Mayen Titanium Edition, now available for pre-order exclusively at the Time+Tide London Watch Discovery Studio.
The Jan Mayen is engineered for comfort, strength and stylish functionality. The case is crafted from bead-blasted grade 5 titanium and features a considered combination of polished and brushed surfaces. It’s an integrated-bracelet design with a distinctly circular foundation, thanks to its prominent, round, bevelled bezel. At 39mm in diameter, the case is perfectly proportioned, with sweeping lug sections, resulting in a lug-to-lug measurement of 45.7mm. The overall thickness is admirable, at 11.5mm, but this includes the sapphire crystal; without it, the watch sits beautifully on the wrist at 9.7mm thick.
Functionally, the case is solid, with a screw down crown and a titanium screw-down case back supporting 100 meters of water resistance. The front of the watch is covered by a double-domed sapphire crystal, featuring an anti-reflective coating. It’s these kinds of features which, at this price point, are important to see, and Straum have managed to achieve a strong level of functionality while maintaining the Jan Mayen’s luxurious lines.
Jan Mayen is named after the small Norwegian volcanic island of the same name, which sits in the Arctic Ocean. It’s no larger than 377 square kilometres and has a rather varied terrain, comprising glaciers and black sand, with some areas covered in mosses, lichens, grasses and wildflowers. This captivating landscape served as the inspiration for Straum with the Jan Mayen Titanium. While there are several colours in the collection, the signature textured dial on our Time+Tide special edition is particularly special.
The exclusive dial is a stunning, warm green with a distinct golden undertone, treated and painted in several stages, including fumé to achieve a unique look. Each dial is stamped in several stages, with increasing detail and fidelity, to produce a striking texture that, when paired with this golden, radiant green, looks fantastic as the light catches it.
It’s not just about looks, though. The dial is functional, too, with broad, bold Super-LumiNova-filled applied indices, and straight, lume-filled hands tracking around a subtle, yet useful minute track. The dial is devoid of any interruptions; there’s no unnecessary dial text or date windows, just a simple Straum stamp, with an applied logo at 12 o’clock, keeping things minimalist yet not too sparse.
As I mentioned before, the Jan Mayen Titanium is an integrated bracelet style of watch; however, this Time+Tide edition comes complete with a black, custom-designed FKM rubber strap that is beautifully formed to the shape of the case. The strap is connected to the watch with a brilliant quick-release system called the Straum Coupling, which is operated by a push-button housed in the grade 5 titanium mid-link of the strap. It’s a genius system that outperforms most quick-release systems in this price bracket because they tend to opt for simple integrated spring bars.
The strap is soft and supremely comfortable, and Straum offers a wide range of colours should you wish to change things up. Each strap connects at the other end via a custom-engraved titanium buckle. And finally, a fully integrated, titanium H-link bracelet is in development, which will complement the look of the titanium case very well indeed.
Flipping the watch over, you’ll see through the sapphire exhibition case back that the watch is equipped with the La Joux-Perret LJP G101 movement. In line with the Jan Mayen’s functionality, the G101 calibre is an automatic self-winding movement, which features a hefty 68 hours of power reserve while beating at 28,800 Vph. It’s a true no-date calibre, not something with a module removed to lower costs, and this particular model is the Soigné grade, which is adjusted to four positions for increased accuracy.
While not the most intricately decorated of movements out there, it does feature subtle côtes de Genève and is kitted out with a tungsten rotor, which is engraved with a simple Straum logo. Overall, the movement is solidly accurate and well-constructed, as you would expect, and adds some Swiss horological flair to the Norwegian brand.
