Studio Underd0g & Fears get behind the bar for one more cocktail with the 02SERIES Mim0sa
Tom Austin- The trilogy of cocktail-inspired collaboration pieces from Fears & Studio Underd0g is now complete, as the third and final instalment, the 02SERIES Mim0sa, hits the bar.
- The chaser to the Gimlet and the Manhattan, the Mim0sa features a similar layered sapphire dial, this time with a bubble-like textured surface, complete with a fully luminous coating.
- Once again, the watch is based on the Brunswick and combines Fears’ British elegance and refinement with Studio Underd0g’s technical ingenuity and creativity.
The most amazing things can happen when two great minds come together, and this year we’ve witnessed arguably one of the most exciting British watchmaker collaborations in recent times between our friends at Fears and Studio Underd0g. The first was the Gimlet, launched at British Watchmakers Day, a watch that came as a massive shock with its luminous, pale-green gradient dial inspired by the gin & lime cocktail. The Gimlet laid the foundation, presenting an amalgamation of Fears’ sophisticated yet restrained Brunswick design, turned upside down by a whopping great shot of Studio Underd0g’s finest creative playfulness.
After taking time to savour the first drink, the next was the palate cleanser, and so the Manhattan was served up in September. In the same vein as before, it was a limited-edition Fears Brunswick that sparked huge interest, thanks to Studio Underd0g’s fumé sunburst whisky-coloured dial. As you may be aware, once you get past that second drink and you’re fully lubricated, the third tends to come rather swiftly, and so, less than four weeks later, the 02SERIES Mim0sa has arrived, the third and final watch in the Fears x Studio Underd0g ‘cocktail trilogy’.
Once again, based on the 38mm Fears Brunswick, the Mim0sa retains that air of sophistication, thanks to the softly curved, cushion-shaped stainless steel curves.
It’s a refined design that is now quite familiar, carefully finished with polished and brushed surfaces, and as you may already know, it wears beautifully due to its well-considered proportions. The case houses another one of Studio Underd0g’s fantastic dial designs, and this time around, they really pushed the boat out with this one.
First of all, there’s the colour; like the drink, the lower portion of the dial is a deeper orange-yellow, fading into a lighter yellow towards the top. Turn the lights out, and the dial fully illuminates, because of course, it’s made entirely from seven carefully applied layers of custom-formulated Super-LumiNova pigment.
That’s not all, though: you’ll notice for the first time that this dial is not completely flat. The subtle, bubble-like texture is formed via 5-axis CNC machining, a process so meticulous that it can produce only 6-8 dials a day, and only around half of those meet the strict quality standards set by Richard and Nicholas.
This surface texture is just deep enough to cast subtle shadows across the dial, adding a layer of dimensionality to what is an already punchy dial. Then, in true Studio Underd0g fashion, the dial is covered by a sapphire disc on which the dial print and huge Arabic hour markers are applied. This results in even more drop shadows, texture and depth, making admiring the dial a total sensory overload in the best way possible.
Unscrewing the oversized onion crown gives you access to the Sellita SW210-1 manually wound movement. As usual, this is a solid workhorse and a purist’s choice, as it allows you to connect with the watch every day as you wind it. It’s the slightly upgraded elaborè version of the SW210, which has been adjusted in three positions, has an accuracy of +/-7 sec/day, and offers a 42-hour power reserve. The movement is neatly covered by a satisfyingly clean, solid caseback. There’s just a cute, small engraving of an orange slice — an integral component of a Mimosa cocktail. Finally, the watch is finished with a gorgeous grey Alcantara strap with a steel pin buckle from the best in the game, The Strap Tailor.
