Nivada Grenchen sees out the first-generation F77 with a two-tone and stone dial celebration
Andrew O'Connor- Nivada Grenchen releases limited edition stone dial variations of its popular F77 MKI in the “Last Series”.
- This series marks the end of production for the first-generation F77, with the second generation having made its debut earlier this year.
- The collection encompasses two tiger-eye variations – one in steel and one in two-tone – in addition to malachite and green aventurine steel models.
Guillaume Laidet has to be one of the hardest-working people in the watch industry currently. While relatively young (and definitely youthful in appearance and energy), Laidet has a plethora of experience in the watch and luxury industry, having completed internships with Moët Hennessy, working at Zenith and Jaeger-LeCoultre, and then launching his first brand with William L. 1985.
Following his success with William L. 1985, Laidet set his sights on reviving legacy Swiss brands, including Excelsior Park and Vulcain. He also founded SpaceOne, an outlet for modern designs and creative watchmaking. His first venture post-William L. 1985, however, was Nivada Grenchen. Re-launched in 2018, the brand has been busy reviving legacy models from the brand’s historic catalogue, offering a mix of accurate recreations, modern interpretations, and limited editions, all built to modern standards collectors expect from contemporary watches. With the current popularity of integrated bracelet watches, Nivada Grenchen’s back catalogue had the F77 waiting to be resurrected.
The revived F77 was launched in 2023 and quickly became an enthusiast favourite. Designed to be as close as possible to the original F77 design, updates included a milled clasp, sapphire crystal, modern automatic movements, and 100 meters of water resistance with a screw-down crown, aligning with what collectors of modern watches expect from a contemporary sports watch. The F77 has served as a platform for numerous iterations, including stone dials, titanium and ceramic cases, and special editions. With this success, Nevada Grenchen saw fit to refine the design, and the F77 MKII was released earlier in 2025. The updates included an updated bracelet design, slimmer case, and updated lug profile to improve wearing comfort, along with a new dial and dauphine handset, resulting in a more refined and elegant aesthetic.
The F77 MKII signals that it is time for the MKI to sign off. Instead of quietly fading into the background, though, Nivada Grenchen is sending the MKI off with a bang, releasing a series of limited editions with semi-precious stone dials.
Across all models, the universal specs remain consistent. The case measures 37mm in diameter, 45mm lug-to-lug, 12.1mm thick, and all have 100 meters of water resistance with screw-down crowns and solid engraved casebacks. Inside is the Soprod P024 automatic movement, offering 38 hours of power reserve. The dials feature applied indices and hands with Super-LumiNova, and are covered with a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.
For the F77 MKI model’s final act, there are four variations. Two of them feature tiger eye dials, with one in full stainless steel and one in stainless steel with yellow gold PVD on the bezel and bracelet centre links. The other two versions consist of a malachite dial and a green aventurine dial, both with stainless steel cases and bracelets. In addition to the bracelet, there is an optional integrated canvas strap with a Velcro closure.
Closing thoughts
I think Guillaume Laidet’s work is really exciting, as he has managed to offer a whole lot of watch at very accessible price points across all of his ventures. I have yet to add an integrated bracelet watch to my collection, and seeing the development of the F77 has the model on my short list, especially the titanium and ceramic variations. With stone dials very much on trend at the moment, this seems to be an appropriate send-off for the model, and I am excited to see what the brand does with the F77 MKII.
