The Laurent Ferrier effect: why are watch experts so smitten with the Sport Auto?
Time+TideThere’s a moment in every watch collector’s journey when it is just love at first sight. Whether or not it stands up to the watch enthusiast or expert’s sense of logic or not, it ultimately becomes secondary to an instant emotional connection that supersedes measured evaluation. For an increasing number of watch enthusiasts, that moment arrives courtesy of Laurent Ferrier. At an event during Geneva Watch Days, we spotted both Danish watch enthusiast Kristian Haagen and Monochrome Watches’ Frank Geelen sporting the same timepiece: the Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto. Is it a coincidence? Or, is it evidence of what we’re calling “the Laurent Ferrier effect”: a kind of horological love affair that spreads through the community like a beautifully crafted contagion? We knew we had to get them on camera and explain.
“I’ve been influenced by influencers,” Kristian admitted with a laugh, recounting how he first spotted the Sport Auto on Frank’s wrist during one of his signature Porsche driving videos. The connection to Le Mans and motorsport heritage caught his attention, but it was also seeing the Sport Auto on Justin Hast’s wrist that sealed the deal. After visiting Laurent Ferrier’s headquarters in Plan-les-Ouates, Kristian tried on the watch. The room fell silent. He didn’t need to say anything; the watch had already spoken.
In our video, Kristian reveals that wearing the Sport Auto has fundamentally shifted his perspective. “It has changed my collecting habits,” he explains. “I have started to look more heavily into the independent brands. I have started to appreciate overly decorated movements.” The devil, as they say, is in the details. The Sport Auto features micro-engraving on its micro rotor, motifs celebrating speed, victory, and Porsche heritage.
These details are so intricate that they require a loupe to fully appreciate. Kristian, admitting he needs prescription glasses to see properly, actually called Laurent Ferrier to confirm he wasn’t missing something. That tiny detail, barely visible to the naked eye, made his love for the brand grow enormously. Since then, the watch has barely left his wrist, except for professional photo shoots. Kristian owns Patek Philippe pieces and has owned multiple Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks, heavy hitters in anyone’s collection. Yet the Laurent Ferrier has become his undisputed champion for daily wear. The scratches accumulating on the Sport Auto tell the story of a watch that’s truly lived-in, truly loved.
Kristian puts it memorably: strapping on the Sport Auto was like “going out with a beautiful woman and not even having dinner, we just went straight to the bedroom.” (A classic Kristian analogy.) For those who love beautiful watches, truly love them, Laurent Ferrier represents something special in today’s market. The brand proves that in a marketplace often obsessed with peculiar specifications, hype, and secondary market premiums, craftsmanship, finishing, and design are what create genuine emotional connections.
Frank’s journey with Laurent Ferrier underscores an essential truth about haute horlogerie: specifications don’t always tell the whole story. He committed to purchasing the Sport Auto before its launch, studying the specs carefully. At 12.7mm thick, he had reservations. “I thought it should be below 10,” he admits, questioning whether it would work on the wrist.
However, he realised that the brand isn’t about achieving ultra-thin proportions, it’s about creating beautiful, ergonomic shapes that wear with impossible smoothness. Frank took the plunge, and that same evening found himself staring at his wrist instead of the movie he was supposed to be watching. Every glance revealed something new to love… And you might be in love, too, after watching our video, or at least encouraged to try one of these Laurent Ferriers on.
