Glashütte Original debuts the PanoMaticCalendar “Blue of Dawn”, inspired by their watchmakers’ early morning starts

Jason Lee

Glashütte Original is sometimes positioned as a more accessible Saxon counterpart to A. Lange &  Söhne, which is something of a simplistic comparison: GO has developed a clear identity of its own, offering watchmaking and aesthetics not found elsewhere, in Glashütte or otherwise. The brand’s Pano collection is defined by an asymmetric, off‑centre dial architecture that naturally invites Lange 1 comparisons, but the story is as much about manufacturing depth as design: GO produces up to 95% of movement components as well as its dials in‑house. Its calibres also lean into regional signatures, notably a three‑quarter plate with Glashütte stripes and extensive hand‑finishing.

Glashütte Original has just introduced a limited platinum version of the PanoMaticCalendar, called “Blue of Dawn.” The watch notably pairs an annual calendar – with Panorama Date and a retrograde month display – with a largely skeletonised blue dial that exposes its beautiful Calibre 92‑11. This 42 mm model includes a moon‑phase at two o’clock and highlights the months via a tinted blue sapphire‑crystal arc, requiring a single correction on March 1 each year. The “Blue of Dawn” theme links the model to the brand’s watchmakers and their early‑morning start – let’s get in early and see why this LE is so interesting.

The case

Glashütte Original PanoMaticCalendar Profile 3

The PanoMaticCalendar “Blue of Dawn” is rendered in platinum with dimensions that keep it squarely in contemporary‑dress territory: 42mm in diameter, 12.4mm thick and 49.28mm lug‑to‑lug. The profile is clean and traditional, with classically shaped lugs that allow the dial architecture to dominate.

Practicality is addressed with 50m of water resistance, a sensible rating for a precious‑metal watch of this type. Around back, an engraved caseback frames a sapphire crystal that opens the movement to inspection – useful given how much of the watch’s appeal lies in its finishing and the visible calendar work.

The dial

The dial of the “Blue of Dawn” does much of the talking. It is extensively skeletonised, coated in a deep blue with a fine matte “vinyl” finish, and ringed by white‑gold hour markers; legibility in low light is supported by luminous dots at each index. Time is indicated by blued‑steel hands with Super‑LumiNova inlays, while the signature Glashütte Original Panorama Date sits at 4 o’clock.

The other signature of the model, the retrograde month, unfolds along a curving, tinted blue sapphire‑crystal window between 3 and 6 o’clock. Only one numeral is highlighted at a time thanks to the ring construction beneath, which keeps the display clear despite its complexity. At 2 o’clock, a classic moon‑phase provides an astronomical counterpoint; its dark‑blue starry sky is crafted by hand: an artisanal detail that rewards close inspection.

Hours and minutes occupy the familiar Pano off‑centre display, with a small seconds just below, preserving the asymmetry that defines the line. The openworked areas reveal hallmark Saxon finishing: Glashütte stripes across the rhodium‑coated three‑quarter plate, bevelled edges, blued screws and polished steel components, bringing both depth and texture to the dial‑side view. It’s truly a treat for the eyes.

The straps

Glashütte Original PanoMaticCalendar Profile

The Glashütte Original PanoMaticCalendar “Blue of Dawn” is available with either a blue Louisiana alligator leather strap or a blue synthetic fabric alternative – the former being quite a traditional choice, while the latter is somewhat avant-garde, pairing such a classical, complicated watch with a modern fabric strap. Both are fitted to a platinum folding clasp, a nice detail that maintains material parity with the case.

The movement

Powering the display is the in‑house, micro-rotor automatic Calibre 92‑11, visible from both sides. It runs at 4 Hz and stores 100 hours of power reserve. The technical foundation includes a silicon balance spring, which is resistant to magnetism and temperature variation; the balance itself features solid‑gold regulation screws.

Glashütte Original PanoMaticCalendar Movement

In keeping with the brand’s finishing standards, the calibre carries the decorative language seen on the dial‑side: Glashütte stripe, bevels, heat‑blued screws and bright‑polished steel. Functionally, the annual calendar accounts for the varying lengths of months, leaving the owner to make a single manual correction each year on March 1. As noted above, the mechanism’s logic is reflected in the dial: the Panorama Date and the retrograde month work in concert, with the tinted sapphire arc ensuring the month display reads at a glance. Each example is assembled, decorated and regulated in the brand’s workshops.

The verdict

The PanoMaticCalendar “Blue of Dawn” takes a measured approach to a complex brief. Rather than hide the mechanics, it uses an openworked dial to make the calendar architecture – and the underlying movement – part of the aesthetic. The result is a watch that reads as a clear expression of Glashütte Original’s design code: asymmetric displays, the Panorama Date, and traditional Glashütte finishing, all executed in luxurious platinum. This is one worth waking up early for.
